18 and Over, License from Another State
Present yourself and your out-of-state license at any Secretary of State office that provides driver services. Bring proof of identity.
You will be required to take the vision test, and you might be required to take the written test. In most cases, the driving test will be waived. You must surrender your old out-of-state license at the time you apply for an Illinois driver's license.
The fee for your first-time Illinois driver's license is $5 for ages 18-20, and $10 for ages 21 and up. It is good for four years.
Again, if you are in the 18-20-year-old category, your license will be printed vertically rather than horizontally. This helps prevent underage drinking by making it clear visually that you are not yet 21. |
